Overview
The Machame route labeled the ‘whisky route’, is another popular route and one of the most scenic. It’s considerably harder going than the Marangu route and involves camping out, but is good for acclimatization and has high success rates.

On the second day, there’s a steady four-hour climb up a steep ridge, like a giant’s staircase, before the path flattens out into a gorge, with a gentle two-hour ascent onto the moorland of the Shira plateau to Shira Hut (3,840 metres/12,600ft), which offers dramatic views of mist swirling around the Shira cone and across to Mount Meru.

From here, with the effects of altitude kicking in, you are faced by a long, steady climb, with views of the glaciers on Kibo, before making a steep descent into the Barranco Valley, eventually reaching Barranco Hut (3,950 metres/12,960ft) after about eight hours.
Day 4 :
Barranco Hut to Barafu Hut
This day begins with a tough two hour climb in single file up the rock face of the Barranco Wall. Although not technical climbing, at one point you must shuffle around a narrow ledge with a drop of 600 metres (1,970ft), before following the southern circuit across scree and ridges to Karanga and Barafu Hut at 4,600 metres (15,090ft).
